To master a language you must understand expressions used in informal situations among friends. This alternative form (不同形式) of language is called slang (俚语). Each English speaking country has its own version and regional variations (变化). Over time, slang words that maintain (保持) their popularity get into the dictionary.

A good example is "cool", which began to be used by young people in the 1960s to describe things they liked. Through Hollywood and music, American slang has been increasingly used in other countries over the past 60 years. But the Australians and British still take great pride in their unique(独特的) forms of slang.

There are many alternatives for greeting people. English people say "Alright mate!" Australians say "G'day, mate!" Young Americans often say "Whassup!" or "What's going on?"

Each country has slang ways to refer to each other. Everyone knows Americans as "Yanks", which is short for Yankees, used during the Civil War for the northern states of the US. Australians, known as "Aussies", call the British "Poms". This term is commonly but falsely understood to be short for Prisoners of His Majesty (the British king), from the time when most of the residents in Australia were convicts (罪

高一英语试卷 高一英语试题

犯). In fact, there is no evidence to support this. Australia is known as "down under" by the British.

The word for toilet has many slang alternatives, including bog, john, can and dunny. There is also a mass of phrases to say going to the toilet: "Going for a whiz", "take a leak" or "have a slash" are all common terms in casual situations.

This brief introduction should prepare you to better communicate with English speakers from around the world.

56. The purpose of writing this story is ______.

A. to explain some interesting slang words

B. to introduce some cultural knowledge behind slang

C. to help you get along better with foreigners

D. to show some differences in slang in different countries

57. Which of the following is wrong?

A. Different countries have different slang expressions to mean the same thing.

B. Some slang words disappear while others remain in use.

C. The word "leak" is another way of saying "toilet".

D. The first English people sent to Australia had committed crimes (犯罪).

58. In which of the following situations is slang definitely not used?

A. A job interview. B. A family reunion.

C. A dinner party. D. A football game.

59. What does the underlined word "casual" mean?

A. not formal B. quiet C. important D. formal

Canadians and Americans usually tip in places like restaurants, airports, hotels and hair salons because many people who work in these places get low salaries. A tip shows that the customer is pleased with the service.

At airports, porters usually get a dollar tip for each bag. Hotel bellhops (男侍) usually get a dollar for carrying one or two suitcases. A hotel door attendant (服务生)gets about a dollar for getting a taxi for people. Many people also tip hotel room

attendants, especially when they stay in a hotel for several days. They usually leave a dollar for each day.

The usual tip for other kinds of services--for example, for taxi drivers, barbers, hairdressers, waiters

and waitresses- is between 10 and 20 percent of the bill. The size of the tip depends on how pleased the customer is. In most restaurants, the check does not include a service charge. If the group is large, however, there may be an added service charge. There is no tipping in cafeterias (自助食堂) or fast-food restaurants.

阅读以下段落, 从选项中挑出符合各段大意的选项。(www.61k.com)注意其中有一项是多余的。

A. The building of the new bridge B. Moving bridge finally won my love C. Opening of the new bridge D. Special feelings about bridges E. Everybody loved the bridge F. Walking across the new bridge G. Excitement about a new bridge

70

I love bridges! Walking across a large river, a busy road or over a railway line is very exciting for me. Sometimes, if the bridge is very high, I feel like I'm flying. If the bridge is very long, I think there may be a problem arriving at the other side. If the bridge is very narrow, I think it may break! When I travel I like to cross bridges. In the USA I crossed the Golden Gate, in Australia I crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and when I was in Thailand I crossed the Friendship Bridge to Laos.

71

Luckily I live in London and there are many bridges here. I live near Chelsea Bridge. So you can imagine how excited I was to hear that there was a new bridge to

celebrate the millennium. A new bridge in London! The first new pedestrian bridge!

A bridge just for people, so no cars, trains or pollution.

72

Every weekend I went to see the building of the bridge. It was great to see it

changing and growing. Then at last it was finished and it looked beautiful. It runs from St Paul's Cathedral to Southwark, it is long and wide.

73

I was really happy that day the bridge opened. I went with my friend Janice and we

高一英语试卷 高一英语试题

waited with all the other people who wanted to cross the bridge too. Everyone was very happy and talking about the bridge. The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: "It will be so good to actually walk across the river peacefully, without cars and trains thundering by."

74

Then, at last, we walked across the bridge! We walked slowly and looked down at the river below. I was very excited. Then I could feel the bridge move a little. It moved to the left and then it moved to the right. Then it moved again to the left and to the right again. I wasn't excited now, I was a little afraid. The other people

stopped talking and looked at each other. The bridge was swinging to the left and right! I was very happy to arrive at the other side of the river without a problem. 75

The next day the bridge was closed and it had a new name: not the Millennium Bridge but the Wobbly Bridge! The architect said there was not a problem: the bridge is designed to move. But the bridge was closed and reopened again later. It is now my favourite bridge in London and I try and cross it as many times as possible.

书面表达:

...The students hold different opinions. Some think that students can bring a mobile phone to school because it has many advantages. If you have a mobile phone, you are able to contact your parents and friends easily. You can also take pictures and enjoy music. Besides, it's fashionable to have a mobile phone. But the majority of the class don't think it's a good idea to bring mobiles to school, because with them students may not pay attention to their lessons. If by chance the phone is not turned off, the ringing will disturb the class. Furthermore, using mobile phones will add to their parents' economic burdens.

I think students can use public phones instead of bringing a mobile phone to school. 听力原文:

Canadians and Americans usually tip in places like restaurants, airports, hotels and hair salons because many people who work in these places get low salaries. A tip shows that the customer is pleased with the service.

attendants, especially when they stay in a hotel for several days.

During my travels through the mountains of Greece I was only ever scared once. It was dusk and as I walked alone I came across six large wolves(狼)that were feeding on the body of a dead animal. I had heard many stories about wolves as a child and it was this animal that I feared more than any other. The wolves before me were huge, at least 6 feet long and covered with thick grey fur.
As I went near, the wolves left the blood-covered snow that surrounded the body and started walking towards me, one after another. They stopped about 20 metres from me and stared. The lead wolf raised his head into the air and took in a deep breath, as if he was smelling my presence. The animals looked both beautiful and frightening, but I knew I could not show them my fear. As I drew nearer, the lead wolf raised its head once more but this time let out a long, loud cry. The awful cry rang out across the silent valley. I had never heard a more frightening sound. I was almost certain it was a sign to be death.
Every moment I expected to see the pack of wolves dash(冲)at me. I knew my only hope was to pretend I had no fear. I walked past the line of wolves, like a general(将军)moving among his soldiers. They cried out loud again. But when they saw that their cry did not cause me to change my direction or make me run they feared to come after me, so they let me pass and returned to the dead animal.

This summer, join the International Conservation(保护)Scouts on a fun-filled holiday with a difference. Year after year, young people from all around the world get together at one of our sixteen conservation camps. Their shared aim(目标)is to help protect the countryside and its wildlife.
Many animals and plants are in danger of disappearing forever. The dormouse, a kind of mouse, for example, needs woodland plants for food and trees to stay in. Its habitat (栖息地) is being destroyed by man and it needs our help to survive.
On a conservation camp holiday, you’ll learn all about nature and how to protect it. Our trained leaders will be with you and tell you everything you need to know. Because of this, you don’t need any experience, just energy and enthusiasm(热情). You will explore the countryside and work to ensure the survival (生存) of hundreds of animals and plants and still have plenty of time to enjoy the camp’s excellent sport games and organized nature paths through beautiful scenery.
The International Conservation Scouts is a world-wide organization, so there must be a camp near you. You can spend a splendid holiday at any of the camps for as little as £60, including accommodation(住宿) and food.

Many people think dreams are full of messages that may not be clear to us common people. But if we think about what is going on in our lives, we can usually come up with an answer. Let’s look at some of the most common dreams. What do these dreams mean?
Falling
You’re falling, falling, falling… and then you wake up. This dream is said to mean you are afraid of something or worried about something. There may be something in your life that is out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another explanation is that you may fail in something. Maybe you’re not doing well in school or work.
Taking an exam(or forgetting that you have one)
You suddenly realize you have to take an exam at that very moment. You might be running here and there to find your classroom. Experts say this dream may mean you’re being tested about something or maybe you are facing a challenge.
Flying
Dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. It may also mean you have confidence in yourself and think no one and nothing can beat you.
Trying to run, but going nowhere
You’re trying to run, but either your legs won’t move or you simply aren’t going anywhere. Some experts think this dream means you’re trying to do too many things at once and can’t catch up or move forward.
In fact, unlike these dreams, there are also many strange dreams that experts may not be able to explain.

书面表达
Boys and girls,
I am glad to have the chance to share with you my experience in Britain for about 10 months as an exchange student. While in Britain, I stayed with a British family and got to learn about the life of common people there. I took a lot of courses, including English writing, English literature, and the history of Britain, etc. During my stay, I went to some pubs with my friends to listen to music or watch football matches. In this way, I experienced part of the British culture. Besides, I visited many libraries and museums and also I traveled to several British cities.
This is really an enjoyable and unforgettable experience, which helped me in many ways. First, I learned to be independent and make some decisions by myself. Second, I got to know more about the differences between Britain and China. Last but not least, I made a lot of friends there and had my English improved, which has enriched my life greatly.
Thank you.

Text 10
The word “pub” is the short form for “public house” in Great Britain. It’s supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, or horse racing, or business. Pubs are usually open from 11 am to midnight.
You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite acceptable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her.
Most Englishmen have their favorite local pubs, where they can escape from the pressure of family life or work, and if they are lucky they tell their troubles to a pretty bar-girl. Indeed, many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they’ll be the host of a seven-night-a-week party.
