每年一到夏天,河水渐渐浅了,清了,从岸上可以透澈地看到近处的河底。早晨的太阳从东边射过来,石洞口的虾便开始活泼地爬行。伏在岸上往下望,连一根一根的虾须也清晰地看得见。

这时和其他的孩子们一样,我也开始忙碌了。从柴堆里选了一根最直的小竹竿,砍去了旁枝和丫杈,在煤油灯上

“又要忙啦!钓来了给谁吃呀!”母亲每次总是这样的说。

但我早已笑嘻嘻地跑出了大门。

把钩子沉在岸边的水里,让虾儿们自己来上钩,是很慢的,我不爱这样。我爱伏在岸上,把钓竿放下,不看浮子,单提着线,对着一个一个的石洞口,上下左右地牵动那串着蚯蚓的钩子。这样,洞内洞外的虾儿立刻就被引来了。它颇聪明,并不立刻就把串着蚯蚓的钩子往嘴里送,它只是先用大钳拨动着,作一次试验。倘若这时浮子在水面,就现出微微的抖动,把线提起来,它便立刻放松了。但我只把线微微地牵动,引起它舍不得的欲望,它反用大钳钩紧了,扯到嘴边去。但这时它也还并不往嘴里送,似在作第二次试验,把钩子一推一拉地动着。我便把线搓动着,一紧一松地牵扯,使钩尖正对着它的嘴巴。看见它仿佛吞进去了,但也还不能立刻提起线来,有时还须把线轻轻地牵到它的反面,让钩子扎住它的嘴角,然后用力一提,它才嘶嘶嘶地弹着水,到了岸上。

把钩子从虾嘴里拿出来,把虾儿养在小水桶里,取了一条新鲜的小蚯蚓,放在左手心上,轻轻地用右手拍了两下,拍死了,便把旧的去掉,换上新的,放下水里,第二只虾子又很快地上钩了……

“你这孩子真会钓,这许多!”大人们望了一望我的小水桶,都这样称赞说。

到了中午,我的小水桶里已经装满了。

“看你怎样吃得了!……”母亲又欢喜又埋怨地说。

她给我在饭锅里蒸了五六只,但我照例地只勉强吃了一半,有时甚至咬了半只就停筷了。

到了第二天早晨,水桶里的虾儿呆的呆了,白的白了,很少能够养得活。母亲只好把它们煮熟了,送给隔壁的人家吃。

“你只是给人家钓,还要我赔柴赔盐赔油葱!”她老是这样地埋怨我。“算了吧,大热天,坐在房子里不好吗?你看你面孔,你头颈,全晒黑啦!”

但我又早已拿着钓竿、蚯蚓,提着小水桶,悄悄地走到河边去了。

夏天一到,没有什么比这更快乐,空水桶出去,满水桶回来。

直至秋天来到,天气转凉了,河水大了,虾儿们躲进石洞里,不大出来,我也就把钓竿

藏了起来。但这时母亲却恶狠狠地把我的钓竿折成了两三段,当柴烧了。
